Jadon Sancho: Sky pundit reveals on air how Chelsea fans reacted to first goal

Jadon Sancho sent Chelsea fans into raptures after scoring his first goal for the club in their 5-1 win over Southampton at St Mary’s, according to Sue Smith.

Enzo Maresca’s side continued their fine form with a thumping win over the Premier League’s bottom side on Wednesday night (4th December) having raced into a 3-1 lead within 35 minutes.

Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku and Noni Madueke were all on the scoresheet to put the Blues in control of the game.

They were then given a helping hand by their hosts when Southampton captain Jack Stephens was sent off five minutes before half-time for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair.

Chelsea continued their dominance after the break, with Cole Palmer getting his customary goal, before Man United loanee Sancho got his first goal for the club late on.

The winger received the ball from the driving Malo Gusto, before firing well past Joe Lumley in the Saints goal to round off an excellent night that his side’s fans certainly enjoyed.

Describing that moment on Sky Sports‘ Soccer Special (9:18pm), Smith said: “It’s 5-1 to Chelsea. Jadon Sancho’s come on as a substitute and it’s a good finish.

“Gusto just drives centrally. Southampton nowhere near him, they just back off, back off. They play the ball out to Sancho on the right-hand side. He finishes it. It looks like Lumley gets a touch on it but the power takes it past him.

“Brilliant performance from Chelsea. The Chelsea fans are absolutely loving it.”

Jadon Sancho’s big moment for Chelsea on loan from Man United

Football Insider Opinion

It does feel as though this could be a significant moment for Sancho when it comes to his time with the Blues.

The winger has had a mixed start to his time with the club, not always fully convincing some of their supporters.

This first goal for Chelsea though is a reminder of just what he has does have the quality to do when he is playing well on a football pitch.

A first goal for his new club should help to lift some of the pressure on him allowing him to play more freely, and potentially earn the backing of a few more members of the fanbase.

It is worth noting that Chelsea will have an obligation to but Sancho as well at the end of this loan spell from Man United, if certain terms are met (Sky Sports).

A goal here could therefore potentially have some interesting implications for the long-term future of the winger beyond the end of his current loan spell too.
