Chelsea have benefitted from major injustice after ‘clever’ Edouard Mendy footage emerges – pundit

Alan Hutton has claimed Edouard Mendy was “quite clever” to deny West Ham’s equaliser against Chelsea on Saturday (3 September).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender said the decision to disallow the goal was “really unfair”.

As shown on Sky Sports (4 September), Maxwel Cornet thought he had found a late equaliser for the Hammers at Stamford Bridge.

Referee Andy Madley ruled that Jarrod Bowen had fouled the Chelsea keeper in the build-up after consultation with the VAR official.

Chelsea were eventual 2-1 winners over the Hammers.

As quoted by Sky Sports after the game (3 September), Irons boss David Moyes said the decision was “absolutely rotten”.

While Tuchel agreed that it was the right decision to disallow the goal.

When asked for his assessment of the decision, Hutton told Football Insider: “I can see both sides.

“But, not sitting on the fence, I don’t think it was a foul. I think he’s been quite clever.

Bowen’s jumped over it, his trailing leg has kind of brushed his arm. I don’t think he was ever going to be able to get up and get to that shot so it is a difficult one.

VAR obviously intervened and took a long time over it which suggests that they weren’t too sure. For me I think it was fine to play on, you have a clash like that now and then. So I think it’s really unfair on West Ham and I’m sure Moyes is raging even more now he’s seen the footage.
