Kieran Maguire lambasts Chelsea after ‘worrying’ Christian Pulisic intervention

Chelsea star Christian Pulisic should have been allowed to make up his own mind on whether to answer a question on gun control laws in his homeland.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest from the Blues’ tour of the United States.

Chelsea have stopped off in Los Angeles, Charlotte and Orlando in their pre-season trip across the pond.

Pulisic, star of the US national team, fielded questions from journalists ahead of the West London club’s 1-1 draw with MLS side Charlotte FC.

But as relayed by the Daily Mail last Tuesday (19 July), a club official stepped in when the 23-year-old attacker was asked about the contentious issue of gun control.

The new ownership group at Stanford Bridge is fronted by Maryland native Todd Boehly and co-financed by US private equity firm Clear Lake Capital.

Pulisic recently signed a letter to the US Congress calling for tighter gun control laws.

Maguire insists that he should have been allowed to answer the question if he wanted.

“It does seem very Big Brother of Chelsea to stop their players from answering questions on broader social issues,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“Perhaps this is because the club want to appeal to the gun-toting fanbase over there.

“So, it’s worrying. Footballers aren’t robots. Pulisic is articulate and intelligent and should be allowed to express his views.”

Chelsea lost their final match in the States 4-0 to Arsenal last Sunday (24 July).

They play their final pre-season friendly against Udinese on Friday (29 July).
