Chelsea look set to be hit by ‘big points deduction’ – ex-Premier League CEO

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has claimed a points deduction “looks clear” for Chelsea unless they sell several key players this summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Blues are in a “mess” and face “very tricky negotiations” ahead.

Chelsea have spent huge money on transfers since Boehly’s takeover in 2022 with their outlay now standing at more than £920million since the deal went through (as per Transfermarkt).

But the Blues look set to miss out on European qualification for the second season running, which will further squeeze their revenue and push them close to a Profitability and Sustainability Rule (PSR) breach.

Finance guru Kieran Maguire told Football Insider on Tuesday (12 March) that Chelsea will be “very close to the limit” of financial regulations in their 2023-24 accounts.

‘Points deduction will be put in place – and it could be a big one’, says Wyness on Chelsea

It has been widely reported that Mauricio Pochettino’s side will look to sell multiple players in the summer window.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s fascinating because they’ve got all these players on long contracts.

“We’re talking about them being forced into a fire sale, but these players have got bargaining power and leverage due to their contracts.

“It’s going to be a very tricky negotiation to handle.

“There’s going to be a lot of money being paid out to settle these contracts before the players even think about moving on.

“It’s a bit of a mess, to be honest.

“If they don’t get this done, then it’s looking clear that a points deduction will be put in place – and it could be a big one.

“It’s a major breach, as it stands.”
