Chelsea new stadium: Keith Wyness drops savage verdict as big plans emerge
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness claimed Chelsea owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital are more suited to building a new stadium than dealing with transfers.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the US private equity billionaires are “the wrong group to handle a football team”.
As reported by The Guardian (10 September), Chelsea have held talks over a potential move to Earl’s Court with expanding capacity a big priority for the club’s owners.
It is claimed discussions have been held with Transport for London, one of the partners that looks after the Earl’s Court site, and real estate developer Delancey.
Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over at Chelsea in 2022 and have since spent more than £1billion on transfer deals – despite not achieving a top-four finish in that time.
Additionally, the Blues boardroom is currently in a state of civil war with both sides vying to take full control of the club.
Boehly and Clearlake are ‘safe hands’ for new Chelsea stadium, says Wyness
Wyness claimed the ownership are the right people to push through a new stadium build.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This is the right group to do this.
“They’ve probably got the right experts to handle infrastructure projects like the stadium.
“But this is the wrong group to handle a football team.
“They’re the safest hands to build a stadium, it’s just what team they put on the pitch once it’s finished.

“That’s the problem.
“These are clever guys, but they’ve been too clever for their own good at Chelsea so far.”
