Chelsea news: Pundit makes ‘huge’ claim after ‘incredible’ FFP update
Chelsea should have already landed a Financial Fair Play sanction due to their huge spending.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie was baffled that the Blues were “still afloat” following years of heavy investment under the leadership of Todd Boehly.
Since the Boehly-led consortium BlueCo bought the club in May 2022, they have reportedly spent in excess of £850million on new transfers including £115million on Moises Caidedo and £106.8million on Enzo Fernandez.
Well-placed sources told Football Insider (1 April) that Chelsea could face a points deduction and transfer embargo if their financial breaches are found to be significant.
Chelsea ‘need’ squad overhaul after ‘ridiculous’ spending
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are expected to sanction many player departures before 30 June to try and balance their books and avoid a hefty punishment.
However, McAvennie claimed it was “ridiculous” that the London giants have not already faced a sanction and was adamant that they “need” to overhaul their squad.
“They need to have a squad overhaul because they should have had one years ago,” he told Football Insider.
“They just kept signing players and didn’t let anyone go.
“You can’t do that – how have they not been fined or sanctioned for FFP?
“It’s ridiculous.
“Chelsea keep bringing players in and nobody is going out the door – it doesn’t balance up.

“All these players on huge amounts of money too.
“It’s incredible. How are they still afloat?”
