Chelsea points deduction: Keith Wyness reacts to big new payout

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Mauricio Pochettino’s compensation payout is unlikely to cause a breach of Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) at Chelsea.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted judgements on property sales at the London club, including the training ground and stadium hotels, will decide the Blues’ points deduction fate.

Chelsea and Pochettino parted ways mutually last week (22 May) and it has been widely reported that he will be due a significant compensation package.

The Stamford Bridge club have tried to avoid a breach of PSR and a subsequent points deduction by selling club hotels and part of the Cobham training ground to a sister company.

In their last financial report, Chelsea reported a loss of £90million – with clubs only permitted to lose £105million over three years under PSR rules.

Pochettino compensation unlikely to cause Chelsea points deduction, says Wyness

Wyness claimed Pochettino’s compensation is unlikely to be the deciding factor in a potential points deduction.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think it’s going to be that close in terms of the margins for Chelsea.

“The whole game will be about these property sales, which are far larger transactions.

“So it’s the training ground, and the two hotels – they are the issues.

“I don’t think Pochettino’s compensation will be the straw which broke the camel’s back, leading to PSR breaches.

“There are much bigger figures involved, and there’s still no clarity from the Premier League about whether those transactions were fair and legal.”
