Chelsea points deduction: Keith Wyness reacts to Roman Abramovich news
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Chelsea will not receive any points deductions for the alleged historic wrongdoings of Roman Abramovich’s regime.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Blues are much more likely to get a financial penalty.
Speaking earlier this month, Premier League chief Richard Masters confirmed the investigation into Abramovich and Chelsea is “reaching a conclusion”.
Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital self-reported the club after flagging concerns over several previous transactions they uncovered during the takeover process.
Their concerns are over payments to different offshore entities allegedly linked to transfers and were not included in Chelsea’s annual reporting under financial regulations.
Chelsea won’t face Abramovich points deduction, says Wyness
Uefa fined the London club £8.6million last year (2023) for submitting incomplete financial information between 2012 and 2019.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It would be hard for the Premier League to penalise a past owner.
“I don’t expect to see any points deductions for Chelsea coming from this Abramovich case.
“I don’t know which way they’re going to go. I think it would have to be a financial penalty.
“It would be unfair to Todd Boehly to punish him for the actions of Abramovich.

“When they first bought the club, they’ll have had this conversation with the Premier League – who may have assured them that there would be no direct punishment.
“There may be some money still in escrow from Abramovich to be used for any punishment.”
