‘Chelsea ready to let five stars go in January’ – Stefan Borson
Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell could be one of more than five fringe players to leave the club in the January transfer window.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it could be difficult to move on the 28-year-old in January due to his high wage demands.
Chelsea have 32 senior players listed on their official website following another busy summer transfer window, where they drafted in 10 new additions for a total of £185.4million.
Since BlueCo – a consortium led by Todd Boehly – took over the London giants in May 2022, they have spent more than £1.2billion on transfers.
Enzo Maresca has largely been playing two different starting lineups in the Premier League and Conference League this season.
But Chilwell is one player who has seen his minutes severely reduced in the opening half of the campaign, having made just one appearance in all competitions.
Ben Chilwell could face difficulties agreeing Chelsea exit
Borson suggested the teams lower down the Premier League could agree to sign some of Chelsea’s players on loan.
“I think it’s going to be a really hard market,” Borson told Football Insider.
“The people who are best-placed to sign players are teams in the lower part of the league who are happy to take loans from teams like Chelsea.
“Chelsea have got three, four or maybe even five players that they would be prepared to let go out of that squad.
“There could even be more actually. But they might be quite enamoured by the Conference League.
“But they have got a lot of players who are on big money that are not part of the first-team squad, and teams have got a good chance of getting those.
“But who wants them? Who wants to take Ben Chilwell and his £250,000-a-week contract, even for six months?

“It’s just a very big commitment for a player that’s barely played in six months.
“I do think the whole market is very difficult.”
