Chelsea sale: Wyness shares verdict on Todd Boehly selling the club – ‘salvage what they can’

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has insisted owner and chairman Todd Boehly will “stand up and fight” at Chelsea despite his failures since buying the club in 2022.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the American and his partners “can’t take the hit” of selling – both “professionally and financially”.

Chelsea have posted back-to-back losses totalling around £211million in the last two years and are now in danger of breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) for the 2023-24 campaign.

That breach, if confirmed, is likely to lead to a points deduction next season.

On the pitch, Chelsea have also gone downhill since Boehly’s takeover – and sit 11th in the table this term after finishing 12th in the 2022-23 campaign.

‘Take your medicine’, Wyness tells Boehly after Chelsea news

Chelsea have spent huge money on transfers since the American’s arrival, with the Blues’ outlay now standing at more than £920million since the takeover deal went through (as per Transfermarkt).

Speaking about the potential for Boehly to quit the club, Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think he’s going to stand up and fight.

“He’s got so much invested now, both financially and personally.

“The partners he has got will want to stay and salvage what they can because they can’t take that hit professionally and financially.

“Chelsea is a trophy asset in many ways.

“It’s a London club. They’ve got to try and get it back on track, take their medicine and realise the error of their ways.”
