Chelsea set to be charged ‘soon’ for Roman Abramovich breaches – sources

Chelsea are expecting to face a profit and sustainability charge for their conduct under former owner Roman Abramovich, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Blues are set to face a sanction “sooner rather than later”.

Chelsea are being investigated by the Premier League for financial breaches committed during Abramovich’s 20-year spell as owner.

Reportedly, owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have held back £150million of their purchase price for the club to cover potential fines that could be issued for irregularities during Abarmovich’s era.

Chelsea to be hit with financial break “soon”

The club were also fined £8.6million by UEFA for FFP breaches in July last year.

Chelsea subsequently released a statement claiming that, after the Boehly-led consortium BlueCo purchased the club, they “became aware of potentially incomplete financial reporting concerning historical transactions during the club’s previous ownership”.

They are also under major pressure following the mega-money spending on players since Boehly’s arrival, which has reportedly exceeded £1billion since the American bought the club in May 2022.

Deepening financial issues are set to force the club to sanction significant player sales this summer, with Football Insider revealing (6 March) that they are planning to sell up to four senior stars before July to meet PSR requirements.

Chelsea sit 11th in the Premier League table and most recently advanced to the semi-finals of the FA Cup after their 4-2 win against Leicester City on Sunday (17 March).

They are next in action against Burnley at home on 30 March after the international break.
