Chelsea slammed as another key man axed – Keith Wyness: ‘it’s a mess’

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has branded Chelsea “a mess” after another reshuffle at the top of the boardroom tree.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed instability behind the scenes is likely to manifest on the pitch for Enzo Maresca’s side.

Last week, Chelsea chief executive Chris Jurasek left the club after just 15 months in his role at Stamford Bridge.

Former president of business Tom Glick left the Blues last year (2023) after just one year in the role.

Jason Gannon, previously the chief operating officer, has been promoted to the role of president.

The news comes amid a civil war at Chelsea with Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly both vying to purchase the club in full and take sole control.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Stability is always key for football clubs.

“That’s from owners and chief executives, you need to give the manager some stability in the background.

“It let’s them keep focused on the coaching.

“Tom Glick was the first chief at Chelsea under Boehly, I know him from his Derby days.

“He only lasted a short time, and now we’ve got another upheaval on the boardroom side.

“It’s just a mess, and they don’t realise it.

“This isn’t a normal investment. Clearlake have got about 50 other mechanical investments, but Chelsea is not a factory turning out widgets.

“This is human beings, and they haven’t got the hang of it.

“Stability is crucial. These are areas they have failed in and they’ve got to admit that failure.

“Only then can Chelsea get back on track.”
