Chelsea told to sign Ivan Toney in double striker deal after latest – pundit
Noel Whelan has claimed Chelsea could fix their woes in front of goal with a double deal for Ivan Toney and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 26-year-old Brentford ace is now a proven Premier League operator.
According to the Daily Mirror (21 August), Chelsea and Everton have joined Man United in the race to sign Toney this summer – with Brentford reportedly braced for bids.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail claim (22 August) that the Blues are close to a reaching a £20million agreement with Barcelona for Aubameyang.
Chelsea have lined up without an out-and-out striker in the new campaign following the departure of Romelu Lukaku earlier this summer.
Whelan insisted the Stamford Bridge club are “crying out” for a natural number nine.
He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “No striker is the same, but Aubameyang and Toney are two completely different players.
“But Toney loves scoring goals, and he’s continuing to prove he can do that in the Premier League.
“He puts in a real shift, he can hold the ball up and bring others into play – but most important is that goal record.
“Chelsea need that right now. You see Havertz and Sterling playing through the middle – but they’re crying out for a number nine they can feed off.
“Toney could be that fit. He’s proven now.

“He’s picked up where he left off, he’s at a good age – it wouldn’t be a bad signing, if you ask me.
“You could still go out and get Aubameyang as well, because they need more than one striker.”
