‘Chelsea’s shock Caoimhin Kelleher stance as Liverpool star nears Brentford switch’

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is set to join Brentford in the coming days, but Chelsea’s surprise stance on the Irishman has been revealed.

The Blues have had goalkeeping problems for a number of years now, with no one able to really nail down the number one shirt since Thibaut Courtois left the club in 2018.

Last season, Robert Sanchez played the majority of games for Enzo Maresca’s side, but the Italian manager did give Filip Jörgensen a run in the team in February.

Kelleher set for Brentford

Kelleher’s move to Brentford is likely to be confirmed shortly, and it is reportedly costing the Bees £18million to prise the Irishman away from Liverpool.

BBC Sport (2 June) Football Correspondent Sami Mokbel has revealed that Chelsea made it clear that a new goalkeeper is not their priority, with a new striker, winger, and centre-back all viewed as more important incomings this summer.

Therefore, Maresca’s side were unmoved by the availability of Kelleher, despite the fact that the price tag was viewed as a bargain by many.

However, Mokbel added that, come the end of the window, if the Blues get the chance to sign a keeper who is an improvement on what they already have, they would likely engage in negotiations.

Maresca is set to tick the first thing off his shopping list, with Chelsea primed to confirm the signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich.

However, the Blues are not hanging around, and they have already begun the search for a new left-sided winger.

Chelsea are interested in Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund, after the Englishman featured in 32 games last season, as Niko Kovac’s side secured Champions League football.

However, the West London side are not expected to take up the option to buy Jadon Sancho from Manchester United, which will mean they are forced to pay the Red Devils £5m just to send the winger back to Old Trafford.

In terms of centre-backs, Chelsea are following the situation of Ezri Konsa, and Aston Villa may be forced into a sale due to PSR issues.
