Chris Powell says which Wolves player could be worth £40m, gives verdict on transfer policy

By Danny Wright

Former Huddersfield manager Chris Powell has suggested that Wolves’ marquee signing Ruben Neves could be sold for as much as £40million in the future.

The Championship side shocked the footballing world last month when they managed to sign up the highly-rated midfielder from Porto in what was a club record deal.

Wolves’ owners are known to have links to super-agent Jorge Mendes, who has Neves, as well as other new arrivals at Molineux, on his list of clients.

Charlton icon Powell, 47, has hinted that the West Midlands side may need to tread carefully with their transfer policy though as players like Neves could be handed with a major shock when he has to play teams like Millwall at the New Den.

“It’s quite obvious what’s happening with Ruben Neves – it’s just showcasing for Premier League sides or possibly sides from Europe,” said Powell to BBC 5 Live Sport, as shown in a video on the the radio show’s official Twitter account.

“There’s no way in the world that he would choose Wolves, not being disrespectful, over Premier League sides when he’s been courted by top sides around Europe.

“The owners are intertwined with an agent so it’s quite obvious they’re trying to showcase him and bring him in for £20million then sell him for double that or even more.

“It’s going to be a real test for Wolves. Some of these players are coming in and I’m sure they’re excited by the project, but going to Millwall on a Tuesday night that’ll be a real test.”

Neves, 20, is not the only high-profile player to have been signed up by Wolves this summer.

Although the Portuguese playmaker cost the Wanderers a Championship record fee widely believed to be in the region of £17.9millon, new manager Nuno Espirtito Santo has also persuaded wonderkid Diogo Jota away from Atletico Madrid on a loan deal.

Defender Willy Boly has also joined from Nuno’s old club Porto on a temporary basis as well as Monaco’s rising star Ruben Vinagre.

In other Wolves news, the club have confirmed that they have agreed terms with this title-winning 23-year-old.
