Chris Sutton blasts ‘careless’ Celtic star after what he did in win vs Hibernian – ‘He didn’t need to’

Chris Sutton was left frustrated despite Celtic beating Hibernian 2-1 at Easter Road on Sunday.

The Bhoys quickly took control of the game mid-way through the first half, with a quickfire double from Daizen Maeda and Arne Engels, before the hosts halved the deficit through a Martin Boyle penalty.

Celtic notched a famous 3-1 win over Feyenoord in the Europa League on Thursday night, and they continued their recent resurgence in domestic action this weekend.

Martin O’Neill extended his 100 per cent record in the Premiership so far this season, with the gap at the top now cut to just two points.

Chris Sutton fuming with Yang Hyun-Jun after Celtic win

Celtic’s imminent appointment of Wilfried Nancy took another twist shortly before kick-off at Easter Road, as it emerged that O’Neill is also now highly likely to be in charge for Wednesday’s clash with Dundee.

Issues surrounding Nancy’s work permit are likely to require the 73-year-old to take charge of the midweek clash as well, but there will be no qualms about that from the Celtic board after the team’s latest display.

The result could even have had more gloss added to it, had Maeda not also seen a goal ruled out for offside in the 11th minute.

Yang Hyun-Jun broke free of the Hibs backline and squared to the striker for a simple finish, only to see the linesman’s flag raised on the far side after the initial pass.

Ex-Celtic striker Chris Sutton was left incensed by Yang’s inability to hold his run, as he bemoaned the lack of care that he showed during the move.

“He’s just drifted there,” Sutton said during Sky Sports’ coverage of the game.

“I thought initially that he was onside, but he didn’t need to go that early. He’s looking right along the line, and that’s the second time Hibs have been caught out at the back.

Yang Hyun-Jun assist has to spark more end product

Yang hasn’t had an ideal start at Celtic since he arrived from Gangwon FC back in 2023, and O’Neill and Co. will be hoping that his performance this weekend can be the springboard to help him add more end product to his game.

The winger produced an excellent cross for Engels to nod home the second goal, but that was just his third goal involvement across 13 games in all competitions so far in 2025-26.

The 23-year-old is a threat with his energy and direct running, but if the final action from him is poor, then it will consistently get opposition defences off the hook.

Celtic got another glimpse of what he can do at Easter Road, and it is now up to him to ensure that becomes the norm in the future.
