Chris Sutton makes strong claim about Celtic transfer deal after Van Dijk seals switch

BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton has claimed that Celtic should not sell Moussa Dembele on the cheap like they did with Virgil van Dijk in 2015 after the defender agreed to sign for Liverpool for a staggering £75million on Wednesday.

Van Dijk, 26, will leave Southampton to make him the most expensive defender in the world in January to move to Anfield, bringing to an end one of the most drawn-out transfer sagas in recent history.

The Netherlands international left Parkhead two years ago for a deal worth £12million, and now Sutton believes that Celtic should be upping their valuation of their players after watching the ex-Groningen centre-back become worth so much.

There have been conflicting reports this week that the Hoops had accepted an £18million bid for Moussa Dembele, but Sutton has strongly claimed that judging by van Dijk’s deal, the Scottish champions should be looking to net a much bigger fee.

“Virgil van Dijk at £75million more evidence why Celtic shouldn’t sell Dembele on the cheap. “£12million to Southampton a snip at the time! It’s about time the Scottish game stops selling their best players on the cheap,” he said on his personal Twitter account.

Van Dijk has not looked his usual self this season for Southampton after been linked with a move to Liverpool in the summer.

The Dutch defender has made just 12 senior appearances in the Premier League for the Saints and has been left out of the squad for the past three games.

In other Celtic news, the Hoops’ odds have been slashed to sign this midfield dynamo and they are now joint favourites with Rangers.
