Christian Eriksen: ‘Incredible’ claim made as Newcastle tipped to rival Tottenham after source reveal – pundit

Alex McLeish has tipped Newcastle United to rival Tottenham for the signing of Brentford playmaker Christian Eriksen this summer.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted it would be an “incredible” gesture if the 30-year-old signed a new contract with the Bees.

A recruitment source told Football Insider last week (17 April) that Tottenham are among the clubs keeping tabs on Eriksen ahead of a potential move and that the Denmark star would be keen on a return.

The Northern Echo (13 April) claim Newcastle are also hopeful of striking a deal for the attacking midfielder, with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

McLeish admitted he would not be surprised to see Eriksen return to Spurs.

However, he suggested the “ambitious” Magpies could prove fierce competition for his capture.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Spurs did lose their rhythm a little bit losing someone like Eriksen. He was a key individual in those years where they came very, very close.

“He’ll be a free agent so it wouldn’t surprise me if he went back to Spurs with his love for the club.

“Newcastle are ambitious as well. They’ve had a couple of great results since Eddie Howe brought in a couple of great players in.

“Also, he seems a very honourable guy. If he stayed at Brentford it would be an incredible gesture.”

Eriksen signed a short-term deal with Brentford back in January after recovering from a cardiac arrest last summer.

He has scored once and contributed two assists in seven appearances so far.
