Christian Eriksen may spark ‘weird’ Man United development after latest update – pundit

Christian Eriksen would only fit in the Man United starting XI if they moved to a diamond formation, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted Man United do not need another attacking midfielder due to the presence of Bruno Fernandes.

Eriksen, 30, is out of contract at Brentford and is yet to decide on his long-term future.

Sky Sports reported on Friday (24 June) that he is deciding between staying at Brentford or joining Man United on a more lucrative contract.

The Denmark international moved to Brentford in January and provided five goal contributions in 11 Premier League games as they easily avoided relegation in their debut Premier League season.

“I think it would be a good signing [for Man United],” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I just don’t see him starting in that team, you can’t start Eriksen and Fernandes, it doesn’t work.

“Man United have been open, their defence is a bit shaky. They need two sitters in there.

“I don’t see where Eriksen plays, I don’t see him on the wing because he’s not a winger, he’s a number 10 or he can play in that central midfield role.

“Maybe you bring in and play a weird formation, maybe a diamond to try and fit him in somehow.

“I just don’t see it as something that Man United need, they’ve got Bruno Fernandes who plays in that role.”

Eriksen has 52 goals and 71 assists in 232 Premier League games across his time with Brentford and Tottenham.

The Bees only lost two of the 10 top-flight games he started in the second half of the 2021-22 season.
