Christiansen: This is how Leeds 27-year-old responded to being axed
By Danny Wright
Thomas Christiansen believes that goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald has responded well to being axed from the No 1 spot against Reading last weekend.
Andy Lonergan was handed his first start of the Championship season in the 1-0 loss against the Royals a week ago after the 27-year-old German had found himself out of form.
Wiedwald was snapped up in the summer with the view of becoming the Whites’ new top choice goalkeeper and although he managed to force Rob Green down the pecking order and eventually out of the club, he has shown little glimpses of being any better than the ex-England international.
However Leeds boss Christiansen has made it clear that Wiedwald has shown great professionalism after being dropped last weekend and has suggested that the German will get more chances to impress him in the future as it is still early days this season.
“I don’t need to speak to the players. Everyone knows their situation but I had my speak with him and I told him what I expected more from him but there has been a very good reaction from him,” said the Dane, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post.
He added: “He understood the reason that I gave him and this is something that we are going to work on.
“Again, it’s a very long league, a tough league and they will have many games on their backs. When we need them they need to be ready.”
Wiedwald has made 12 appearances for Leeds across all competitions this term, keeping six clean sheets in the process.
All of those shut-outs came in a six-game run which saw the Whites put themselves top of the Championship table before a poor run of results which now leaves them sixth ahead of Saturday’s clash with Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
Three points for Leeds will not only prevent a four-game losing streak, it will also see them leapfrog City into fourth place in the standings.
In other Leeds United news, this senior player has been ruled out of the clash with Bristol City.
