Proven top-flight performer responds to reported Newcastle interest
By Danny Wright
Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has confirmed that he is fully committed to the Ligue 1 club after a report surfaced that Newcastle United were keen on signing him.
French football magazine France Football has recently reported on their website that the Magpies are keeping close tabs on the 24-year-old shot-stopper, as well as Serie A titans Juventus.
It was understood that Areola has rejected a new contract offer from PSG after efforts were made to replace him with Jan Oblak and Pepe Reina on transfer deadline day.
However the former France youth international has rubbished those claims and has hinted that talks are underway about his future in Paris.
“I am currently concerned by two very important matches with the French team,” said Areola in French on his personal Twitter account on Thursday, as translated by the Newcastle Chronicle.
“Rumours about my future are totally unfounded even if I understand that the media must tell or write some stories and that Paris Saint-Germain attract a lot of attention.
“I want to say that I am attached to the club which has the ambition to win everything, to the city of Paris, and that I concentrate on my season.
“All that is said about me is false! We will talk about my future in-house with the club.”
Areola has been crucial to the PSG side this season, playing every minute of all of their games across all competitions.
He has made 11 appearances in both domestic and European contests, keeping seven clean sheets in the process.
The goalkeeper has proven himself to be a solid performer between the sticks in the French top-flight for PSG this term, helping his side remain unbeaten in their opening eight games in which he has conceded just five goals.
