Clive Allen raves about Tottenham 23-year-old, states he could break this club record
By Derek Smithson
Clive Allen has highlighted the qualities of Tottenham forward Harry Kane and stated that he could even rival his all-time goalscoring record.
Ex-Spurs striker Allen holds the club’s record for the most goals scored in a single season, when he netted 49 times in just 54 appearances during the 1986-87 campaign.
That is the most amount of goals scored by a Spurs player in one season and Allen suggested that “anything is possible” when asked if Kane could challenge it.
“Don’t forget after that first season in 2014-15 people were saying well, it was a bit of a lucky season, a one-off’ but he’s now done it for three seasons, not one,” Allen said, as quoted by the club’s official website. “To be that consistent at that level is phenomenal, especially in the modern game now. He’s in the best place to score goals – so anything is possible!”
Kane has become one of the best players in the Premier League during recent years and is an ever-present in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
The 23-year-old was in prolific form last season and scored 35 goals in just 38 appearances, with a series of injuries the only thing preventing him from more.
He could have gone close to challenging Allen’s Spurs record if he had avoided injures during the year, but will still have plenty more years to try surpass it.
Barcelona legend Lionel Messi proved this season that the goalscoring records can be smashed in the modern era as he struck 54 times in 52 games last season, but he is regarded by most as the sport’s best ever player.
Kane is already establishing himself as one of the world’s top-class strikers, but may have to up his game another level if he is to rival Allen.
The England international continues to prove doubters wrong by performing each year and will hope to help Spurs win their first ever Premier League next season.
