Cody Gakpo could ‘walk into Newcastle XI’ after confirmed news – pundit
Cody Gakpo would be an ideal signing for Newcastle United even if his performances for PSV are misleading.
That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
The 23-year-old is currently representing the Netherlands at the World Cup and has been one of the tournament’s breakout stars scoring three goals in four games ahead of Friday’s (9 December) quarter-final against Argentina.
Sources told Football Insider last month (26 November) that Man United have reached an “agreement in principle” with the attacker but will still have to convince PSV Eindhoven to accept a bid.
However, Wenham claims a move to Newcastle may be more appropriate for the midfielder.
“I always urge a bit of caution with these transfers,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“His stats look really good but with that division and the players who do well over there, I just think of Steven Bergwijn.
“He came to Tottenham after getting stats like that and he never really adapted to English football, he has now returned to Holland.
“So I don’t see these links with some of the clubs that he has been linked with, absolute top clubs.
“He would walk into a club like Newcastle, he would walk into that midfield and it’s a signing that probably fits their profile.
“I would just urge major concern because playing well in the Netherlands doesn’t always translate to playing well in the Premier League.

Gakpo scored 13 goals in 24 games for PSV before the World Cup break.
He has also registered a remarkable 17 assists this term.
