Cole Palmer responds as Jadon Sancho sends ‘strong’ Chelsea message

Chelsea winger Jadon Sancho was delighted to score his first goal for the club in their 5-1 Premier League win over Southampton on Wednesday (December 4).

The 24-year-old rounded off the scoring at St Mary’s with a thundering close-range effort to secure all three points for Enzo Maresca’s side.

Axel Disasi opened the scoring after seven minutes, but Joe Aribo got the equaliser soon after to give the home side some hope.

Russel Martin’s insistence on playing out of the back proved to be a mistake once again, gifting Christopher Nkunku with a goal to restore Chelsea’s lead after a mix-up between goalkeeper Joe Lumley and his defenders.

Noni Madueke scored Chelsea’s third just before Jack Stephens’ moment of madness saw him receive a straight red for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair.

Star player Cole Palmer snuck in to steal Nkunku’s second goal, which he later apologised for on social media, with Sancho getting his first Chelsea goal 11 minutes later.

The winger has regained some form since making the move from Man United on transfer deadline day, scoring once and providing five assists in six appearances across all competitions.

Sancho has made ten appearances both domestically and on the continent so far this season, starting six and yielding a total of 499 minutes of action.

Delighted to get off the mark for his new club, Sancho took to Instagram to send a message to the fans after an “unforgettable” moment, with Cole Palmer among the first to react.

Chelsea’s win over Southampton took them into second, nine points behind league leaders Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title.

Maresca’s side travel to North London on Sunday (December 8) as they face Ange Postecoglu’s inconsistent Tottenham in arguably their toughest fixture of the festive period.
