Connor Goldson lucky to avoid ‘major’ controversy as Rangers footage analysed – pundit

Rangers defender Connor Goldson was lucky not to concede a penalty for a foul on Eintracht Frankfurt’s Rafael Borre in Wednesday’s Europa League cup final, according to Alex McLeish.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers manager admitted the 29-year-old “got away with” what could have been a “major talking point”.

As shown in BT Sports’ highlights of Wednesday’s game (18 May), Goldson appeared to kick Borre’s foot in the box in attempting a tackle shortly after the 50-minute mark.

Frankfurt’s appeals were dismissed by referee Slavko Vincic, who was not advised by VAR to review the incident.

McLeish suggested the officials “did not want to spoil the spectacle” of Wednesday’s game.

However, he admitted there were a couple of players who were lucky to avoid further punishment.

Asked if he thought Goldson was fortunate to escape without conceding a penalty, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah. There were one or two players who got away with things you’d think would be flagged up.

“In the whole scenario, I don’t think it needs to be a major talking point now. You could see with some decisions he didn’t want to spoil the spectacle.

“I’m probably a bit old school, some of the modern-day guys will be thinking: ‘Oh he was rubbish,'”

Goldson played the full 120 minutes in the Gers’ defeat in Seville.
