Conor Gallagher opens door to joining Man United, Thomas Tuchel is key to deal

Conor Gallagher would be open to moving to Man United in an attempt to reignite his England prospects ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Man United have long had their sights on Elliot Anderson, yet increased competition from other high-profile Premier League clubs could see them pivot to another midfield alternative.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider that Man United would be the only destination Gallagher would consider, if he was to leave Atletico Madrid.

The Englishman has fallen out-of-favour under Diego Simeone with his lack of minutes potentially jeopardising his spot in the Three Lions squad next summer.

Gallagher ‘open’ to move away in January as England aspirations fade away

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the Madrid giants would consider letting go of the number four for the right price.

Sources told Football Insider that Gallagher could leave Atletico Madrid for around £26million, certainly a tempting option for Ruben Amorim to bolster his midfield in January.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast over the ex-Chelsea starlet’s desire to break back into the England fold via this decisive transfer, I explained: “For Gallagher himself, he might be open to considering a move away in January due to his ambitions of trying to break into Thomas Tuchel‘s World Cup squad.

“He’s missed the last three squads that Tuchel’s named for England right now as well.

“He might be thinking he needs to move on in search of regular first team football and to put himself back in the Premier League shop window for Tuchel, if he is to make a late bid for that World Cup squad to America next summer.”

Man United to widen midfield search after Morten Hjulmand setback

The increased pursuit of the former Crystal Palace loanee likely stems from Amorim’s failed bid to bring an ex-Sporting CP player to Old Trafford.

Sources told Football Insider on 29 October that Man United will find it incredibly hard to sign Morten Hjulmand in January.

The Dane worked under the Red Devils boss during the 2023-24 and start of the 2024-25 season in Lisbon, with a potential reunion looking less and less likely the closer the transfer window comes.

£50million would seal the deal for Hjulmand but, with Gallagher coming in at possibly half the price, it would make more sense to go for the latter.
