‘Constant presence’ – Real Madrid make Adam Wharton stance very clear

Crystal Palace’s summer of uncertainty could be made worse by Real Madrid’s position on midfielder Adam Wharton.

Wharton has been an ever present in Palace’s midfield since joining the South London club from Championship club Blackburn in February 2024.

Palace will be reluctant to let the 21-year-old leave given Liverpool’s interest in Marc Guehi and Arsenal and Spurs’ pursuit of Eberechi Eze.

Transfer plans have already been hit at Crystal Palace due to a ruling by CAS demoting the club from the Europa League to the Europa Conference League this season.

Oliver Glasner has signed only two players this summer and will be reluctant to let Wharton leave alongside possible Guehi and Eze exits.

The Daily Mail [12 August] report that Spanish giants Real Madrid are monitoring Wharton’s performances and have been a ‘constant presence’ at Selhurst Park alongside fellow interested club’s Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City.

Football Insider revealed in July that Tottenham held interest in Wharton but Palace would demand £100million to let the midfielder leave.

Wharton started and assisted a goal in Palace’s penalty shootout victory against Liverpool to begin the new campaign in fine form.

Football Insider Verdict

Wharton is one of the Premier League’s finest young deep-lying midfielders and letting him leave would represent another blow to Glasner.

Wharton’s Crystal Palace record in all competitions.

The Austrian manager currently faces a tough campaign due to the lack of new additions to the squad, so letting his star players leave could plunge Palace into a relegation battle.

With Real Madrid and the biggest Premier League club’s circling for Warton, it seems inevitable that the 21-year-old will one day depart Palace.

Real Madrid already have English stars Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jude Bellingham in their squad and the lure of the Bernabeu could be too much for Wharton to turn away.

Palace need to quickly show ambition in the transfer market now their European fate is decided or potentially face more departures to club’s who are fighting for trophies or can offer Champions League football.

The start of a new Premier League season for the Eagles is being met with little optimism, despite their FA Cup success, where they begin the campaign away at Chelsea.
