Cristian Romero hits out at Tottenham online and then quickly deletes post

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero claimed he was tired during their north London derby defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

The 26-year-old reposted Argentinian journalist Gaston Edul on X, formally known as Twitter, suggesting that the club’s travel arrangements following the international break were to blame for their 1-0 defeat – he has since deleted the repost.

Romero played every minute of Argentina’s two World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia before heading back to London to feature in one of the biggest games of the season.

Unlike most Premier League clubs, Spurs don’t arrange for private transport to bring players back from international duty and instead leave it to their respective federations.

Due to the travel arrangements, Romero returned to the club on Friday, while Arsenal’s Brazilian contingent were back in training for the Gunners on Thursday.

The centre-back was partially responsible for Gabriel’s winning goal, being out-muscled by the Brazilian so he was able to win a free header.

Cristian Romero makes Tottenham claim after loss

Romero played a lot of football over the summer, starting and finishing five of Argentina’s six Copa America games, including their extra-time 1-0 win over Colombia in the final.

He has since done the same thing for Spurs, playing every minute of their opening four Premier League games this season.

His apparent tiredness doesn’t seem to have affected his overall game, however, with the defender winning 100 per cent of his tackles, 25 duels, and making 24 recoveries.

Translated to English, Edul’s post says, “Tottenham lost to Arsenal again.

“It does not end up consolidating itself to fight because it is not in the details:

“It was the only Premier League club that brought back its players from their national teams on its own and without its own logistics, as decided by its leaders.

“It gave it an advantage because its players arrived with less rest than the rest: Cuti Romero played with a feverish squad.”

The defender may finally get a rest this week as Spurs face Championship side Coventry in the League Cup on Wednesday (September 18).

Spurs then face Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (September 21) as they hope to put their North London derby defeat behind them.
