Crystal Palace may already have their Marc Guehi replacement, Oliver Glasner is delighted

Crystal Palace are set to plan for life without captain Marc Guehi, and they can save millions on his replacement.

Guehi sees his contract expire in June 2026, and there is a growing acceptance that the 25-year-old will move on next summer.

During the most recent transfer window, Palace pulled the plug on Guehi’s transfer to Liverpool after Oliver Glasner threatened to walk out of Selhurst Park.

Football Insider revealed on October 10 that Liverpool are confident of signing Guehi despite rival interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

But the potential departure of their captain leaves a big void that needs filling, and Glasner may already have the answer.

Jaydee Canvot shines for Crystal Palace vs Brighton

Guehi suffered a heavy bone bruise in the closing stages of Palace’s 3-1 win over AZ Alkmaar in the Europa Conference League on Thursday, and as a result, missed the visit of Brighton.

So, the Austrian manager trusted 19-year-old Jaydee Canvot to make his first Premier League start, and the youngster didn’t disappoint.

Canvot slotted into Guehi’s role like a glove and produced a sensational performance as the Eagles kept a clean sheet.

90 minutes played
40/44 (91%) passes completed
2/3 tackles won
2 interceptions
8 clearances
4 recoveries
4/8 ground duels won

The Frenchman was a calm and composed presence in defence, much like his compatriot, after misplacing just four of his 44 attempted passes.

The teenager also showcased his physicality and positional awareness with four ball recoveries while winning two of his three tackles.

Palace supporters would have been worried when Guehi suffered an injury, but Canvot’s performance inspired hope that life without him could be prosperous.

Oliver Glasner’s verdict on Canvot

Canvot, who joined Palace for £23million from Toulouse in the summer, made everything look so easy and boasted an elegance to his play.

That is impressive for someone so young, and manager Glasner picked out some positives from his display, including his confidence in building out from the back.

“I was happy with his [Canvot’s] performance against AEK Larnaca, despite his mistake that led to a goal. What I mention often is it’s part of development, especially as a young player. He’s 19, Glasner said after the game.

“He had an excellent game at Liverpool. I see him in training, what he can do. That’s also the reason why we signed him: we see he has all the hardware you need as a centre-back. He has pace, he’s tall. We have to work with his heading, especially in attack.

“He’s comfortable in the build-up. I think if he gets more confidence, he’s even better in the build-up than what he showed today – more like at the end, because he also can drive into the midfield.

“That’s what we could see. That’s why we signed him and now it’s for him, giving him time, step by step, helping him to become the best Jaydee he can be.”

Canvot has been tipped to become a £69m player in the future due to his incredible potential, and once Guehi does leave, he will have the chance to fulfil it.
