Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi breaks silence after armband controversy

Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi has broken his silence on his decision to write a message on his rainbow captain’s armband during their recent game against Newcastle United on

The 24-year-old had written, “I love Jesus” on the armband to display his religious belief, although the FA stated that he will not be charged for the situation.

The rainbow armband was issued to all 20 Premier League clubs and is worn in partnership with the Stonewall charity to improve LGBTQ+ inclusion within football.

Displaying religious messages are prohibited on jerseys is prohibited within the laws of the game, and the FA formally reprimanded the club for the situation.

The England international has now provided his first public message since the situation and has doubled down on his Christian message.

Guehi took to Instagram to state, “Jesus loves you. Stay blessed.”

Palace continued with Guehi in the team on Tuesday (4 December) as he played the entire 90 minutes as the Eagles defeated Ipswich 1-0.

Ipswich captain Sam Morsy had also come under scrutiny regarding the rainbow armband as he was the only Premier League captain to not wear it at all.

The 33-year-old is a practising Muslim and chose not to wear the armband due to his personal religious beliefs.

Palace will be back in action against Man City on Saturday (7 December) as they attempt to continue their three-match undefeated streak.

The Eagles are 16th in the Premier League table and sit just three points above the relegation zone.
