Crystal Palace warned of ‘huge gap’ after Oliver Glasner exit – ‘How do they compete?’

Crystal Palace will continue to lose their best players in the future no matter who the manager is at Selhurst Park.

That is according to football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who has exclusively told Football Insider his verdict after Oliver Glasner confirmed he would leave Crystal Palace at the end of the season.

Glasner felt he was not being backed by the Crystal Palace board, with the south London club in European competition for the first time in their history this season.

The Eagles have lost key players during Glasner’s tenure, including captain Marc Guehi to Man City in the January transfer window.

Crystal Palace faced with ‘reality of losing best players’

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Plumley believes Crystal Palace‘s lack of transfer activity was the main factor in Glasner deciding to leave.

I think it’s a huge part of it, isn’t it? You know, we’ve seen his outburst, and it was a controversial one. But he obviously caught the headlines,” Plumley said.

“I think he’s pretty clear, and he feels like he’s not being backed. And also, of course, they’ve had high profile players that have moved on in the summer. They’ve just lost Marc Guehi There’s now rumours about [Jean-Philippe] Mateta.

“So, you know, I have some sympathy with Palace there because, looking at the Deloitte Money League, they are twenty-fourth on that list. A nice phenomenon for a club like Crystal Palace to be, you know, in that list on revenue terms.

But it’s driven by Premier League broadcasting and also their revenues, €232m. If you look at Manchester United in eighth position, that’s €793m. The gap’s huge.

“There is a question of how do they compete, and I get that they lose their best players. That’s just the reality of it, because the biggest clubs in the world will continue to take those where they want.

So it is tough for Crystal Palace, but, yeah, I think it’s pretty clear that Oliver Glasner after, of course, you know, with the major trophy, getting into Europe, it’s pretty clear here that he feels he’s not being backed.”

Aston Villa line up move for Crystal Palace star

Crystal Palace are already searching for their next manager, with Tottenham manager Thomas Frank emerging as a contender.

It could be a big summer at Selhurst Park following the loss of Glasner and Guehi, and with striker Jean-Philippe Mateta having now asked to leave the club.

Premier League rivals Aston Villa are interested in signing Mateta in January, with the 28-year-old having netted 10 goals this season.
