The midfield maestro was in his third year at White Hart Lane when he helped the club to their League Cup success, having put in some of the best form of his life under new manager Juande Ramos.

He was a crucial player in the dismantling of fierce rivals Arsenal in the semi-finals, and he made sure that his performance in the final was again of high quality.

His energy in the midfield was second-to-none and his deliveries from set plays caused a constant threat to Chelsea’s back line – a warning the Blues failed to heed.

It was his whipped cross from a free kick which led to the winning header in extra time, and it was an assist deserving of a goal.
