Cyriel Dessers: Multiple clubs worked on signing Rangers star in January
Rangers striker Cryiel Dessers was subject to interest from a number of European clubs in January, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that many expected the 30-year-old to move on given the level of interest in the mid-season transfer window.
Sides across Europe had worked behind the scenes on a possible move to sign Dessers, but no deal materialised and he remains a part of Philippe Clement’s squad.
Football Insider revealed on 18 January that Rangers would accept “major offers” for the forward and was seen as a sellable asset last month.
His departure then would have allowed room for more spending to find a replacement, as the club were forced to operate with a “one in, one out” policy.
The financial concerns at Ibrox limited their spending in the window, but Dessers’ departure was initially viewed as a potential route towards raising funds.
Rangers open to Cyriel Dessers exit after European interest
Dessers remains a divisive character at Ibrox, with his 18 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions this season representing a consistent source of goals.
However, his performances have left fans frustrated, and the number of chances he misses has been a long-standing concern for Clement and the Rangers hierarchy.
The striker has also dropped out of the first-choice starting XI in recent weeks, having started just three of their last 13 Scottish Premiership games.
Had a substantial offer arrived in January, Rangers were open to seeing him leave, and there is a feeling his exit could now take place in the summer.

Hamza Igamane attracting interest from Everton
Hamza Igamane is also attracting interest as a result of his performances in a Rangers shirt so far this season, with Everton the latest side to be linked with a move.
Football Insider revealed on 2 February that the Toffees are “doing their homework” on the 22-year-old amid a growing feeling that he could move on in the summer.
Clubs had initially weighed up the possibility of a January deal, but the striker’s contract at Ibrox is set to run until 2029, which put Rangers in a strong position to keep hold of him.
