Cyriel Dessers savaged by McAvennie after Rangers bust-up
Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers is a ‘decent’ striker but is a long way off being the best in the country despite 12 goals in 16 Scottish Premiership games.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Scotland striker Frank McAvennie admits that Dessers, 29, has been impressive so far this season but he still has aspects of his game he needs to improve.
The Nigeria international has been a standout in what has been an underwhelming start to the season for Rangers with five goals in their first six games of the season.
Two of those five goals came in the Glasgow giants’ 6-0 thrashing of Ross County on Saturday (August 24), both expertly finished from close range.
Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers still has work to do
Dessers has been a divisive figure at Rangers, despite scoring 27 goals in 60 appearances for the club since joining from Italian side Cremonese back in 2022.
“He’s not even close”, McAvennie told Football Insider.
“Listen, he’s a good player but he’s not doing himself any favours telling the fans to F-off and all that.
“One thing he’s got to do, if you’re getting stick, just bite your tongue and put the ball in the net, that’s what he’s got to do.
“You can’t give supporters stick, these guys are paying a lot of money, they’ve been messed about and they’ve gone to a new stadium.

“There is no doubt he a good striker and if you give him a chance he’ll score but he didn’t look too out of place at the weekend because there was nobody marking him.
“My advice would be to keep your head down and don’t vent your anger at the supporters because it will come back at you 12-fold.”
