Dan Ashworth: Newcastle United face transfer ‘big blow’ after confirmed news – pundit
Noel Whelan fears it would be “a big blow” to Newcastle United’s transfer plans if Dan Ashworth cannot come in until November.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League striker said the Magpies need a director of football “as quickly as possible.”
On 7 February, Dan Ashworth resigned from his position as technical director of Brighton with a view to assuming a similar position at St. James’ Park.
However, the Magpies are yet to agree compensation with the Seagulls which means Ashworth may not be able to start work until the end of his gardening leave in November.
As quoted by the Chronicle (1 April), Eddie Howe stressed the importance of the club appointing a director of football.
He said the improvement of the club’s recruitment set up is “a matter of urgency.”
When asked by Football Insider‘s Russell Edge for his thoughts on the latest, Whelan said: “It could be a big blow to their transfer plans.
“If they can’t sort it they might have to go for Plan B, whoever is number two on their list. They need somebody in as quickly as possible.
“I’m sure Brighton are holding Newcastle to ransom because they know how much money they have and they would probably like to use that elsewhere.

“At the same time, if you are going to go for somebody you have to commit. It’s like with players, they are only worth what you’re willing to pay for them.
“When you look at how well Brighton have recruited and how well the team has been built there you would have to say that he is worth it.”
