Dan Burn injury timeline set after new setback away from Newcastle
Newcastle fans have learnt the severity of Dan Burn’s new injury after he failed to play for England against Wales on Thursday evening.
Dan Burn has become a hero on Tyneside over the last few years, with cult-hero status achieved after he netted the opener in Newcastle‘s Carabao Cup triumph against Liverpool back in March.
Thomas Tuchel handed Burn his England debut not long after, and he remained a rock at the back as the Magpies impressed towards the end of the last campaign to finish fifth in the top-flight.
Burn signed a contract extension with Newcastle in May, a reward for his great form under Eddie Howe, and Tuchel has continued to back him for the Three Lions with two more caps since his debut.
The 33-year-old was named in Tuchel’s latest squad ahead of England‘s games against Wales and Latvia, but he failed to appear against the former on Thursday (9 October), and the details of his new setback have now been revealed.

Dan Burn will not miss any Newcastle games after breaking a bone vs Nottingham Forest
Burn played the full 90 minutes of the Magpies’ last game before the international break, coming away with an assist as they beat Nottingham Forest 2-0.
He was spotted training with his hand strapped at St George’s Park during the week, however, then was left on the bench for England’s 3-0 win over Wales on Thursday, and he revealed why to Chronicle Live after the game.
Burn said: “I actually broke my hand, I don’t even know how I did it, I think I went to grab someone and then I felt a crack. It was early in the second half (against Forest) so I went for the scan and I have seen a specialist.
“I’ve been told I can play with it. I am ready for Latvia, I am ready for Newcastle and I’d have been ready to play tonight (against Wales).
“I will not be missing any time for a broken hand! This is nothing, I have had worse injuries than this. I am ready to go and ready to play.”
The news that Burn is not set to be out for any extended period of time will come as huge relief to everyone connected to Newcastle, especially considering Howe’s current defensive predicament with Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento both currently out injured.
Burn has a good chance of being at the 2026 World Cup
A recent report stated that Thomas Tuchel intends to take Burn to the World Cup next year, as the German boss has been “taken” by the 33-year-old’s nature both on and off the pitch.
It is clear that he is as big an influence behind-the-scenes as he is while playing for his country, and Tuchel is clearly planning on taking a number of older players to the USA after Harry Kane previously insisted the Euro 2024 squad was “light on leadership.”
The Three Lions boss is said to believe that the North American heat will see a lot of the tournament’s games have low scorelines when entering the final half-hour, so he wants Burn as an option from set-pieces, even from the bench.
Speaking in March, Tuchel said: “I truly believe Dan Burn (has) every chance to be with us in the World Cup. Football in general but maybe even more international football is about team spirit. It is about building a team that loves to play with each other, that transports the spirit to the fans, the nation and the country.
“It is about building a brotherhood. We cannot only do this with young players or senior players, it has to be a good balance. I was surprised that Dan [Burn] was never called up. He is such a tall guy but obviously it is easy to overlook him.“
The 33-year-old’s inclusion in the latest Three Lions squad has handed him the opportunity to impress even further, and he will be fighting for a chance to stake his claim when they travel to Latvia for a World Cup qualifying clash next Tuesday (14 October).
