Daniel Levy will be delighted with latest £50,000-a-wk Tottenham player development – reports
Paris Saint-Germain have entered the race with Manchester United and Barcelona to sign Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld in the summer, according to a report.
The Telegraph claims that PSG will look for a new manager in the summer and will give him a healthy transfer budget to improve the squad, starting with bolstering the defence by eyeing up a move for Alderweireld, 29, after he reached an impasse in contract talks with Spurs.
It is understood that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will be delighted with the development as it opens up a potential bidding war for the Belgium international, who could leave for £25million next summer if an extension clause is triggered in his deal.
Mauricio Pochettino is said to have given the green light for Alderweireld to move on in the summer and will listen to bids worth around £40million.
However Spurs would rather he did not join a Premier League rival, so PSG’s involvement in the hunt to sign him could potentially reap massive financial gains for the North London club.
The Daily Mail has previously reported that the centre-back wants to more than double his current earnings of £50,000-a-week at Tottenham, but Levy has been playing hardball in negotiations that now appear to have completely broken down.
Football Insider verdict
In an ideal world, Tottenham will be able to wrap up a new deal with Alderweireld and they will continue this rise in quality every season. However not every top player can be expected to remain in North London for the rest of their careers and there’s a major chance for the Belgian to quit the club and go elsewhere to win regular silverware. PSG are not a team that will shy away from spending big and they must surely know that the defence is by far the weakest part of their squad. Alderweireld is better than anything they already have so they will be desperate to beat Man United and Barcelona to his signing. Spurs just need to reinvest that money wisely.
