Danny Mills points finger at Leeds United’s main relegation ‘problem’

Danny Mills has claimed Leeds United would still be in a relegation battle even if Marcelo Bielsa was still in charge.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender insisted Leeds’ troubles this season are more down to the players than the manager.

Bielsa was sacked and replaced by Jesse Marsch in February after a run of four defeats in the Premier League with Leeds 16th in the table.

They dropped into the bottom three earlier this month and currently sit in 18th with two games left to play.

“They are in it,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I’ve said numerous times that those games in hand could always be a problem. Everton and Burnley got results that were highly unlikely and dragged Leeds back into it. That’s when it became a problem.

“You can ask whether the same would have happened under Bielsa and hindsight is a wonderful thing.

“The only team that has changed their manager that has worked is Newcastle and that was done before January and they brought in quality signings as well.

“That’s what it has made the biggest difference. Eddie Howe has had an impact but Kieran Trippier’s leadership and Dan Burn and Bruno Gruimares coming in have made a difference.

“Norwich changed their coach and there was no difference. Watford changed their coach and it made no difference. Everton changed their coach and it has not made a huge difference.

“You are down there for a reason and it’s generally down to the players.

“The problem Leeds have got is it is not in their hands. The goals against column has been the main problem.”
