Danny Rohl has transformed once-derided Rangers player, he’s key to beating Celtic and Hearts to title

Danny Rohl has worked wonders at Rangers since he took over at Ibrox in October.

Despite the Gers being in a terrible mess upon Russell Martin’s departure, the manager has somehow dragged Rangers back into the title race.

This is despite the quality of the Old Firm’s side being well below standard, with the Glaswegian side now officially unable to qualify for the Europa League playoff stage.

Much of this is down to Martin’s terrible summer signings. However, Rohl has now managed to turn former flop Thelo Aasgaard into a wonderful player in recent weeks.

Thelo Aasgaard is in fine form for Rangers

Aasgaard’s first few months at Rangers were awful.

Despite impressing in England, the attacking midfielder was unable to make any sort of positive impact at Ibrox.

This resulted in many Rangers fans slamming Aasgaard’s performances after failing to impress on numerous occasions.

The 23-year-old’s poor displays even saw Aasgaard hauled off at half-time against Celtic in January, with this change helping the Gers win the match 3-1 thanks to a wonderful second-half comeback.

As a result, it appeared that the attacking midfielder was just another terrible Martin signing, who was incapable of a redemption arc.

However, in recent weeks, Rohl has managed to transform Aasgaard, with the former Luton player finally showcasing consistent quality.

In his last eight matches, he has picked up six goal contributions, including an assist in Rangers’ 1-0 win over Ludogorets on Thursday.

His wonderful free kick against Annan Athletic in the Scottish Cup also drew widespread praise.

This saw Annan Athletic manager, Willie Gibson, praise the finish to Inside Ibrox on 16 January, describing it as “quality”.

As a result, it is safe to say that the midfielder has finally hit form, and if he can continue this until the end of the season, he could prove to be key to Rangers’ Scottish Premiership title ambitions.

With Hearts now without Lawerance Shankland through injury, and Celtic struggling up top, a player of Aasgaard’s quality may prove to be the difference.

How good has Aasgaard been for Rangers in recent weeks?

In recent weeks, Aasgaard’s stats for Rangers have been terrific.

Looking at the Ludogorets game on Thursday, Fotmob on 24 January estimates that he completed 85 per cent of his passes, created three chances and an xA of 0.47.

On top of this, he completed every dribble that he attempted and performed three recoveries.

With this not even being Aasgaard’s best game in recent weeks, it really shows how far he has come in January.

Now, the challenge for the attacking midfielder and Rohl is to ensure that this is not a purple patch.
