Danny Rohl to be ‘instrumental’ at Rangers in January after double exit, one more sacking imminent

Danny Rohl will be put to the test in the January transfer window following Rangers’ decision to sack Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen and Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who states that Rohl will be held more accountable for Rangers‘ January transfer activity.

Rangers sacked chief executive Stewart and sporting director Thelwell less than a year into their posts, with pressure from supporters also a factor in the decision.

Thelwell’s son is also expected to be dismissed by Rangers as the overhaul behind the scenes intensifies.

Rohl will need backing on the pitch in January, with Rangers’ 2-2 draw at Dundee United leaving them fourth in the Scottish Premiership table, nine points off leaders Hearts.

Danny Rohl to be ‘instrumental’ in Rangers January plans

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has been impressed with how Rohl has handled his start at Rangers.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insists that Rohl needs to add further quality to his squad.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I do think they’ve got to be active in January, a bit like Leeds have got to be active in January and both clubs. There’s a weakness at the very top of the organisation here, and they’re almost going to be pushing them to do things in January and that’s something of a slight desperation feeling about both clubs and that comes from the top.

I think Danny Rohl, he’s impressed me with the way he started, the way he’s approached things. He seems very level-headed. The players seem to be responding quite well, but there is a bit of a lack of quality.

And yes, I do expect him to do something in January. It’ll be interesting to see how Rohl handles this, because without a real sporting director, the situation at the moment, then he’s going to have to be more instrumental probably than normal. So we’ll see.

A lot of the players that do move in will be Danny Rohl type players, and he’ll be involved in that. So it’ll be interesting to see what sort of things he favours in terms of their personality and their character.”

Rangers to take their time on key appointments

Rangers want to appoint a new chief executive before a director of football joins the club, though no deals are expected imminently.

The Glasgow club want to take their time to make the right appointment, but it means it is unlikely either will be in place for the January transfer window.

Nedim Bajrami could leave Rangers to free up some transfer funds as Rohl looks to overhaul the squad.
