Danny Rohl to Rangers edges closer as details of face-to-face meeting revealed
Rangers may have just edged closer to securing Russell Martin’s replacement ahead of their clash against Dundee United.
It’s been a manic few days at Ibrox, as Steven Gerrard rejected a return to Rangers, with the Scottish giants focusing their efforts elsewhere.
Football Insider understands that Rangers have narrowed down their managerial shortlist to just two names, including former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl and Shanghai Port coach Kevin Muscat.
As it stands, Rohl appears to be the top candidate for the job, and the 36-year-old has already met the Rangers hierarchy ahead of a potential switch.

Danny Rohl left ‘strong impression’ on Rangers
Rohl has been out of work since leaving Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent at the start of August.
The German tactician garnered praise for the job he did under tough financial constraints in S6, miraculously keeping the Owls in the Championship in 2023/24 before guiding them to a 12th-place finish.
Although Rohl isn’t seen as the most glamorous appointment by supporters, his potential is limitless, and he’s already left a ‘strong impression’ on the Rangers hierarchy.

That is according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, who revealed the club had ‘face-to-face talks’ with their ‘top candidate’ last week.
Plettenberg adds that ‘no decision’ has been made yet, but this appears to be a huge step toward securing their replacement for Martin.
Indeed, Football Insider revealed on October 6 that Rohl would be open to joining Rangers, which suggests personal terms would be easily agreed.
What Barry Bannan said about Rohl joining Rangers
There have been some contrasting opinions around the Germans’ potential switch to Ibrox, and Billy Dodds has already warned Rangers about appointing Rohl.
Danny Rohl’s record at Sheffield Wednesday |
89 games |
34 wins |
19 draws |
36 losses |
Dodds feels it could be a ‘rinse and repeat’ of Martin’s arrival, given his lack of trophy-winning experience and the time he’s spent in management.
On the other hand, Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan has backed Rohl to succeed at Rangers, if they hire him.
“I think he could be a massive success at Rangers,” Bannan said. “He loves things like this. Rangers are right up his street because he loves a challenge.
“I’ve never seen a fanbase take to a manager as much as ours did with Danny. And that’s obviously what Rangers need. I think it’s a good match.
“He plays the game on the touchline and that’s what Rangers fans want to see. He’ll believe he can still get Rangers challenging for the league this season. Danny will target winning the title.”
