Darwin Nunez could land an extended Liverpool suspension following his Copa America bust-up, sources have told Football Insider.

If FIFA gets involved in the situation, there is a precedent that a domestic ban could be handed to the striker that would severely impact Liverpool.

The world governing body has previously intervened in controversial incidents similar to the Copa America brawl, opting to provide the punishment they feel fitting immediately rather than waiting for future international games.

That’s why the the 25-year-old could end up being hit with a domestic suspension for Liverpool’s upcoming games, despite the altercation taking place on international duty.

This happened in 2014 when Luis Suarez was banned from all football-related activities for four months after he bit Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup.

Liverpool fear Nunez could also be in hot water with the global governing body if they choose to get involved.

Eric Dier was previously involved in an incident with fans where he climbed into the stands to confront people who were abusing his brother while he played for Tottenham Hotspur.

The England international received a four-match ban for his behavior, as well as a £40,000 fine.

Neymar is another high-profile player who has had an altercation with fans in the stand while representing his club, which led to him receiving a three-match ban by the French Football Federation.

Nunez was spotted climbing into the stands as he got physically involved in the altercation, which could cost him several games for Liverpool.
