Darwin Nunez posts new Liverpool message after being called out by ex-striker

Liverpool star Darwin Nunez shared a new cryptic post on social media following his statement in response to Arne Slot’s recent criticism.

Nunez faced scrutiny for his Liverpool performance in the 2-2 draw against Aston Villa on 19 February in the Premier League.

Nunez missed an open goal after being set up by Dominik Szoboszlai, with the shot sailing over the bar, which ultimately left Liverpool with just a point at Villa Park.

Diogo Jota was preferred to start in the centre-forward position over the Uruguayan international. Nunez came on in the second half but missed a glaring open-goal chance that would have secured the win for his team.

In Arne Slot’s post-match press conference, he called out Nunez for his work rate, following the horror miss. He said, “I will tell him that you can miss a chance, but you cannot miss out on work rate.”

In light of these comments, Nunez shared a statement after the match and followed up with another post following strong criticism from pundits, with ex-Watford striker Troy Deeney saying he should “never play for Liverpool again”.

However, there are indications that his future may be uncertain, with speculation about a potential exit. Liverpool came close to selling Nunez to Al Nassr during the January transfer window, but the Saudi Arabian side ultimately pursued a deal for Jhon Duran instead.

This season, Nunez has struggled, starting just 16 of his 35 appearances across all competitions, including only seven starts in the Premier League. His contributions have been limited, with a return of six goals and five assists in 1,710 minutes of action.

Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider that Nunez could potentially be included in a swap deal for Isak, although the club would need to include “a lot of cash” in the arrangement.

With players like Luis Diaz, Jota, and Cody Gakpo often being preferred over the Uruguayan forward, it appears that Slot is also exploring other options for the striker position.

Nevertheless, Nunez has shown determination following his recent miss and performance, and it will ultimately be up to him to decide whether he can turn things around at Anfield.
