Darwin Nunez: Pundit verdict on Man United hijacking Liverpool deal after source’s £80m update

Darwin Nunez will consider interest from Man United but will ultimately choose Liverpool as his next club, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 22-year-old could make the centre-forward spot his own at the Anfield club.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (10 June) that Liverpool have entered talks with Benfica over a deal for Nunez worth over £60million – plus add-ons that could take it towards the £80m mark.

A Reds source told this site that the Uruguayan is pushing for the move to be sealed “as soon as possible” and would even want it done by the end of the week if possible.

However, the Daily Express has claimed (9 June) that Nunez’s agent Jorge Mendes will meet with Man United in a last-minute effort to gazump their northwest rivals.

Campbell suggested the Benfica hitman may be put off by the prospect of competing with Cristiano Ronaldo for his place.

“He’ll be taking every bit of interest very seriously before making a decision,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“That being said, Liverpool will be very high up on his priority list – because of who they are and what they’ve done in the past few seasons.

“It’s all change at Man United but he’d still be competing with Ronaldo for a place. Meanwhile at Liverpool, that centre-forward spot could be all his.

“I think he’ll go down the Liverpool route.”

Nunez netted 34 goals from 41 matches in all competitions in 2021-22, including strikes in both legs of Benfica’s Champions League quarter-final defeat to Liverpool.

His current deal runs until June 2025.
