Darwin Nunez sends message to Liverpool ‘idol’ Luis Suarez
Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has taken to social media to wish former striker Luis Suarez a happy birthday.
The 25-year-old has found some form in the new year, providing three goal contributions, including a crucial late brace in the 2-0 win over Brentford, in his last three games across all competitions.
Nunez had a starring role in Liverpool’s 2-1 Champions League win over Lille on Tuesday (January 21), even though he didn’t score or assist.
The Uruguay international played the full 90 minutes, ending the game with the most successful tackles of any other player on the pitch (4), created three chances, and a 100 per cent shot accuracy rate.
Liverpool’s win over Lille saw them retain their impressive 100 per cent Champions League record, winning all seven of their games, scoring 15 goals, and conceding just two in the process.

Nunez has been in and out of the side under Arne Slot this season, starting 15 of his 28 games across all competitions, scoring six goals, and providing four assists in his 1493 minutes of action.
Suarez, 38, who spent three years at Liverpool before leaving for Barcelona back in 2014, is currently plying his trade at Inter Miami with Lionel Messi, scoring 25 goals in his 37 games since joining in December 2023.
Nunez took to Instagram to wish the former Liverpool and Uruguay national teammate star many happy returns, saying: “Happy birthday idol! Thank you for everything.”
Liverpool’s win over Lille made them the first side to qualify for the round of 16, with a trip to Dutch club PSV at the end of the month (January 29).
Slot’s attention will be firmly on the Premier League for now, however, as they host relegation-threatened Ipswich Town on Saturday (January 25).
