Darwin Nunez set to be ‘target’ for Rangers after new development
Frank McAvennie has claimed Darwin Nunez will be a target for the Rangers players when they face Liverpool in the Champions League.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic and West Ham striker said the game against the Gers will be a “gimmick” for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
As shown on Sky Sports (15 August) Nunez was sent off in the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace after headbutting defender Joachim Andersen.
The Glasgow club secured their place in the group stage of the competition after a 1-0 win over PSV Eindhoven in the second leg of the playoff tie last Wednesday (24 August).
They were drawn in a group with Liverpool, Ajax and Napoli.
Rangers will head to Anfield for the first leg on 4 October.
McAvennie claimed it will be a difficult game for both sides, but insisted the Reds will come out on top.
“It’s going to be hard,” he told Football Insider.
“I say all the time that teams won’t like coming to Ibrox, but Liverpool won’t be bothered by it.

“They’ll want to get points at Ibrox and take something off them, but I think it’s a gimme for Liverpool. Anfield is a fortress. But the Rangers manager has proven that he can go and play against some good teams. It’ll be hard for Liverpool to beat – once the Liverpool machine starts going they’re hard to stop.
“If Nunez is playing, the players will be winding him up trying to get him sent off because they know he’s got a short fuse. Everyone will target him but I can’t see Rangers getting anything off Liverpool.“
