David Turnbull facing Celtic axe after what expert has seen
David Turnbull is facing a spell on the sidelines at Celtic despite starting their opening league game.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie suggested there are too many other options for Brendan Rodgers to choose from in the midfield and Turnbull will find himself down the pecking order once again.
The 24-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Parkhead but has struggled for game time in recent seasons.
But the midfielder featured heavily for the Hoops during pre-season since Brendan Rodgers returned to the helm and was in the starting lineup for their league opener against Ross County on Saturday (5 August), netting two goals.
It was the first time Turnbull has started a league match since November 2022 where he played the full 90 minutes in a 2-1 victory over County.
But McAvennie suggested the Scotland international shouldn’t get used to being back in the team.
“I do not think Turnbull is going to get a run in the team,” he told Football Insider.
“There are just so many midfield players now. Everyone has their favourites and everyone knows who you want to play in midfield.

“If it was me, I would want to play, I would not want to sit on the bench knowing that I am putting a shift in every day and not getting a game. It would destroy me.
“I can’t understand players that want to sit there and take the money.“
In other news, defender granted permission to complete Celtic move and undergo medical.
