David Turnbull is ‘better’ than Celtic after what expert has seen

Frank McAvennie has insisted David Turnbull is “too good” to stay at Celtic.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker insisted Turnbull deserves more than just being on the bench.

As shown on CelticTV (19 January), the 23-year-old scored the fourth goal in the Celts’ 4-0 win over St Mirren on Wednesday (18 January).

The midfielder was on the bench for Ange Postecoglou’s side and scored just 15 minutes after his introduction.

The Scotland international has made 17 league appearances for the Celts this season and has started just six of those games.

He has scored three goals and provided four assists in those outings.

Turnbull’s current Parkhead contract runs until 2024 after he joined from Motherwell in 2020.

When asked what Turnbull’s future at Celtic will look like, McAvennie told Football Insider:I like David Turnbull, he brings something different but he has not got the pace.

I think [Reo] Hatate is a world beater. Apparently [Tomoki] Iwata is better than him. [Callum] McGregor is just cruising. [Matt] O’Riley has been hot and cold recently. There is competition.

If Turnbull wanted to move somewhere I think the fans would be ok. He is just a back-up at the moment and he is really a better player than that.

When he comes into the midfield he does not let anyone down but he is not going to be a starter. I think he is too good to be there.
