Tottenham news: Ben Davies could set for unexpected new role after ‘huge’ development

Noel Whelan has suggested Ben Davies could be the surprise answer to the Tottenham wing-back hunt.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Antonio Conte may consider looking for a new wide defender after Ryan Sessegnon’s injury troubles.

The Italian manager, speaking at Thursday’s press conference (10 March), confirmed the 21-year-old will be missing until after the international break with a hamstring problem.

Spurs also have Sergio Reguilon who can play on the left-hand side of a back five.

Whelan suggested while Conte may look at signing a replacement for Sessegnon, Davies, 28, could fill in and save the club millions in the transfer market.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s going to be frustrating for the manager because he knows the quality that Sessegnon possesses and losing him is huge.

“Then you start thinking do I need to go back into the transfer market? Do I need cover? Do I need someone that’s not going to be injury-prone?

“There’s a lot of food for thought for Antonio Conte and the board. Then again, Davies could be the answer.

“You’ve got the cover of someone who can play that wing-back role and drop into a five out of possession.

“It might be a case where they don’t need to step into the market. Maybe Davies can step into that wing-back role.”
