De Vrij swoop to add 'steel' as Tottenham stars slammed after source reveal - pundit
Stefan de Vrij is worth his £40million price tag to Tottenham if he can introduce some “steel” to their rearguard, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, slammed Spurs for being “too nice and too weak” at the back at present.
This site exclusively revealed yesterday (November 15th) that Inter Milan star Stefan de Vrij has told friends he is interested in joining Tottenham in January.
A source with knowledge of the Dutchman’s situation has told Football Insider that he is aware of interest from Tottenham and is keen to hear their proposals.
The former Lazio defender is valued at around £40million. His contract at the San Siro is set to expire in 2023.
Whelan hinted that De Vrij could reintroduce “nastiness” into the Tottenham ranks.

“They need that nastiness back, in my opinion,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“I would have loved to play against this Tottenham side in my day, I really would. They’re far too nice, too weak at the back.
“They have to enjoy defending, not so much the playing out from the back – they are a team who need clean sheets.”
“Leave the playing out from the back to the midfielders, like Hojbjerg. They can be the ones who drive into the opposition half and create something. You’ve got to remember where your lines are as a defender.
“They need a bit of steel at the back. If De Vrij can introduce that – then by all means, he is worth the transfer fee.”
Tottenham sit ninth in the Premier League table and are winless in three.
They are already ten points adrift of league leaders Chelsea.
